Club History

The Name

The historical significance of the name “Elkhorn” is attached to the elk who, many years before, roamed the Delta area in large herds. Specifically, the Tule Elk, with a background of Monte Diablo, is the sketch on the official seal of the City of Stockton.

The Tule Elk was the largest game animal in the San Joaquin County. As late as 1864, a herd estimated in size of 2,000 head was seen roaming through the valley. Indeed, as many of these great beasts roamed, surely they must have crossed the very land Elkhorn Country Club now occupies. Thus, the Club was named and derives some pride of the historical meaning behind the name.

The Club

In 1961, Elkhorn Golf Course became an idea. In 1962, ground was broke and construction began. The course opened for play in 1963. Today, the Clubhouse, remodeled in 1992, sits on the very spot of the old Clubhouse, and Elkhorn is now Elkhorn Country Club.

Nancy Caplin, and her late husband, Ty, purchased Elkhorn in 1978. Today, Nancy and her staff take great pride in operating this private facility, which employs 75 full and part-time employees.
